Why Your Moisturizer Might Not Be Working

And How to Fix It

Dry skin in the winter is something I’ve struggled with for years — but I know many people deal with dryness all year round, even when they’re using moisturizer consistently.

If you feel like your moisturizer “isn’t doing anything,” there are a few reasons this might be happening. The good news? There are simple, affordable ways to increase moisture retention and keep your skin feeling softer and more comfortable.

 1. Exfoliate First

If dead skin cells are sitting on top of your skin, your moisturizer can’t penetrate effectively.

Try avoiding oil‑based exfoliants for this step — oils can block moisturizers from sinking in. Instead, consider:

• A washcloth
• A luffah
• Exfoliating gloves
• A chemical exfoliating body wash (newer and sometimes pricier, but effective)

Removing that layer of dryness first means your moisturizer is actually being applied to skin that can absorb it.

 2. Moisturize After You Shower

Your skin is naturally more porous when it’s warm and slightly damp.
Applying moisturizer directly after bathing:

• Helps your skin absorb product more effectively
• Traps water between your skin and the moisturizer
• Prevents water from evaporating off the surface
• Encourages increased blood flow near the skin, improving absorption

This one tiny change makes a huge difference.

 3. Lower Your Shower Temperature

Hot water might feel comforting, but it strips away your natural oils — and these oils are crucial for maintaining your skin’s moisture barrier.

Skin‑temperature water helps:

• Preserve your body’s natural protective oils
• Reduce dryness and irritation
• Strengthen your moisture barrier over time

Remember: natural oils aren’t dirty — your body creates them for protection.

 4. Seal Your Moisturizer With a Body Oil

Once your moisturizer is applied, finishing with a body oil (like baby oil or vitamin E oil) can:

• Create an occlusive layer
• Trap moisture beneath it
• Extend hydration throughout the day

This is the same logic behind why so many skincare influencers finish their routines with facial oils.

I hope these tips help you stay soft, hydrated, and comfortable through the winter season — and beyond.
